TOP TIP FOR CHRISTMAS VISITS:

Visit the Christmas lights at Stourhead National Trust property and gardens, just a 15 minute drive away!

"We increased our stay from 4 nights to 7 due to the peaceful and well organised site. There are lots of beautiful places to visit including Stourhead and Montacute NT houses open all year. We even had a day trip to the coast (Lyme Regis). All good where Covid cleaning etc is concerned. Quiet and friendly." - Ross Billingsley

"We were visiting a local country home for their Christmas lights and Long Hazel was booked for us by our friends who also stayed. What a lovely well run facility. Brilliant." - Carole Allcock

"Met friends and parked motorhomes together. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Their Christmas decorations are fab! Fantatsic stay. Local pub, lovely meals for us all. Highly recommend it. Convenient for many attractions. We did Stourhead Xmas lights Saturday and Bath show ground flea market Sunday." - Barbara Smith

SOMERSET CHRISTMAS TRADITION

The "ashen faggot" is a Christmas tradition across Somerset and Devon, held on Christmas Eve. Seemingly linked to the "yule log", the ashen faggot is made from ash tree sticks and bound with nine green lengths of ash to hold it together. The sticks are thrown on to the fire, with the flames bursting each binding, one at a time. As the withy bindings break, it is tradition to raise a toast and make a wish. When all the bindings have broken, a piece of the half-burned ash sticks is taken to form the log for the next year. The use of ash is though to relate to the birth of the baby Jesus, who was said to be kept warm at his birth by the burning of an ash tree.

WINCANTON RACES BOXING DAY

One of the most popular horse race days in the calendar is the annual Wincanton Boxing Day races. As one of the West Country's courses owned by The Jockey Club, Wincanton is situated just a few miles from Paul Nicholls' stables and often features his young horses in races.

Tickets for the Boxing Day races are from just £10.00 and are selling fast! Wincanton racecourse is just 8 miles away from Sparkford.

NEW YEAR 2025

Start the new year of 2025 off with some bracing Somerset walks. Our nearest view across Somerset and Dorset is at Cadbury Hillfort, otherwise known as King Arthur's Camelot at South Cadbury. The old Iron Age hillfort has 7 hectares of open space and is ideal for dogs to run around. There's also a great pub at the bottom, The Camelot.

If you'd like to go a bit further afield, why not travel over to Glastonbury and climb Glastonbury Tor? You'll see Cadbury Camelot from the top and they're both 500 feet above sea level, providing great views of the ancient Isle of Avalon.

TRADITIONAL SOMERSET WASSAILING

Stay a little longer in Somerset and enjoy the tradition of wassailing! Traditionally taking place on twelfth night, so around 5th or 6th January, this ancient celebration takes place in orchards across the county.

Join in with singing and the tradition of blessing the apple trees for next season's crop by tying toast to the branches. It's also custom to enjoy a mulled cider!

Whilst you can often visit small cider farms, the most well attended ceremony is usually at Glastonbury Tor, visited by local druids.
