Somerset is a great area to go cycling, whether you have a peddle bike or an electric bike. With cycle routes mapped out by Sustrans and the South Somerset Cycle Route, as well as locals giving their best recommendations, there's something for everyone! Take a look below for recommended country lanes, hilly trails and even off-road routes.

Somerset County Council have 20 maps with over 9000 rights of way. These cycling routes total 3808 miles, making it a perfect place to research your cycling holiday in Somerset. Castle Cary and Bruton is a great local route, with lots of farm shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants along the way for lunch!

Visit South Somerset has a great 80 mile cycle route mapped out on their website. The route is split in to 8 different stages, with our nearest bike-friendly route just 4 miles away at Castle Cary, taking you to the local market town of Somerton. Alternatively, there's a 12 mile route from Castle Cary to the Dorset town of Sherborne, just over the border from South Somerset.

Cycling website Komoot has 20 cycling routes recommended by cyclists for South Somerset. The routes are split in to categories for fitness, surfaces and skill. There are also some great ideas for viewing spots to see more of Somerset during your cycle route.

Somerset is notably famous for the Tour of Wessex cycle route, which is a yearly, three day cycle competition with a distance of 330 miles. The Tour of Wessex takes place across Somerset and the neighbouring counties of Dorset and Wiltshire.

The Tour of Wessex route is particularly adventurous, so perfect for advanced cyclists seeking a very active cycling holiday in the West County. Alternatively, if you're looking for a hilly route to use your electric bike during your camping and caravanning holiday, this is a great start for route planning!

CYCLIST CAMPING DISCOUNT

We offer a discount for cyclists camping with us in South Somerset. If you would like to bring your tent and stopover on a cycling route, or explore Somerset by bicycle, we charge a reduced pitch fee of £24.00 per night for two adults, bicycles and a tent pitch, inclusive of 16 amp electric hook-up, free WiFi and complimentary hot showers.

It's easy to cycle to Sparkford from Castle Cary, Yeovil Junction or Yeovil Pen Mill railway station too.

Our holiday lodges for hire are ideal for cyclists and motorcyclists who wish to travel light, but who still want a luxury experience and somewhere comfy to sleep after a long day on the road! Our lodges are available for hire all year round, with full private kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and decking areas.

We operate 17 tent pitches which provide space for tents of all sizes throughout the spring and summer months. Our camping and caravan park are adult only.

Our dog walk map makes a great start for cycle rides up to 6 miles locally around Sparkford and South Cadbury, with stops scheduled at local pubs and cafes along the way.

The Leland Trail (1 mile)

The famous 28 mile footpath from Penselwood to Ham Hill runs very close to us in South Somerset for a long walk!

 

Corton Ridge (4 miles)

A very challenging, hilly walk encompassing Cadbury Hillfort at South Cadbury, verging on the Dorset border

 

The Monarch's Way, Castle Cary (4 miles)

King Charles II's escape route following his Civil War defeat, spanning 615 miles across England and crossing through Somerset just four miles away in Castle Cary

 

The Macmillan Way, Castle Cary (4 miles)

A 290 mile trail from Lincolnshire to Dorset, crossing over with The Monarch's Way

 

Ham Hill Country Park, Stoke Sub Hamdon (13 miles)

A Somerset hillfort which has been occupied since prehistoric times, later becoming a quarry from Victorian times

 

Glastonbury Tor (15 miles)

If you've visited King Arthur's Camelot at South Cadbury, you can also visit Glastonbury Tor which is mentioned in Arthurian legend - King Arthur is said to be buried at Glastonbury Abbey and likely passed through our park in Sparkford on his final jouney.
