VISIT SOMERTON DURING YOUR STAY AT LONG HAZEL PARK, CARAVAN PARK & CAMPSITE
During your stay, we recommend a visit to the market town of Somerton, which was the former county town and thought to be the 14th century capital of Wessex. Somerton then became a market town in the Middle Ages, primarily for the glove making trade and gypsum mining.

This Ancient Market Town is 9 miles due west of Sparkford and is steeped in history.
As a market town, Somerton has held a weekly market since the Middle Ages and is known for the Market Place, which was constructed in 1673. Archaeological remains of the town suggest occupancy from Celtic times, with local people at the time adopting a Roman lifestyle.
Once the Ancient Capital of Wessex in around the year 900 and since Celtic times once ruled over by King Ina. The town is mentioned in the Saxon Chronicles and still has several ancient buildings including The Butter Cross in the Market Place, St Michael and All Angles Church dating from the 13th century with a magnificent carved roof by the Monks from Mulcheny Abbey including the mischievous carving of a cider barrel!
